Santa Barbara City College provides many career opportunities to those who want to learn a new skill rather than attend college. Hoover Dam is a project built to give water and hydroelectric energy to the area in between Arizona and Nevada. The project is powered by the Colorado River. About 100 years ago, George Washington Smith started the Spanish Colonial Revival style. Smith moved to Santa Barbara after working as a businessman and studied at Harvard for a while. Taken aback by the popularity of his designs, he decided to continue his works in Santa Barbara and became one of its founding fathers. The architect’s designs are admired for their simplicity, as he used authentic Spanish materials and mixed the old with the new. He influenced many artists, and Kenny Slaught recognizes the keen eye for detail needed to create such amazing pieces.

Those suffering from terminal illness and their loved ones can find support at the Hospice of Santa Barbara. The organization offers many programs focused on those who struggle with loss. It is estimated that 20 percent of kids lose a parent before 18 years old, while one in 20 lose at least one caretaker before reaching adulthood. Kenny Slaught notes that the Hospice’s programs help people heal from trauma and mitigate issues like depression, anxiety or PTSD.

Kenny Slaught says that when a kid loses a parent, they might feel overwhelmed with grief. The I Have a Friend program was created for children in such situations, and help them see they aren’t alone by being mentored by someone who experienced the same thing. The volunteer acts as a companion offering sympathy, which often results in a long lasting friendship as the child learns how to process their feelings.

The annual event enables students, educators, musicians and charity organizations to connect and debate Santa Barbara’s art education state. The project allows for better, more focused future initiatives. Other outreach programs include giving instruments to students in need, financing local projects that use Santa Barbara Bowl’s available resources, and sponsorships for art students. Furthermore, the organization funds a children’s program at Cottage Hospital and many in-school and after-school programs in neighborhoods affected by the Santa Barbara concert season. The Notes for Notes program, notes Kenny Slaught, provides free instruments and classes to students. The projects are ran by a community volunteer committee.
