George Washington Smith was the creator of the Spanish Colonial Revival style almost a century ago. Smith dropped out of Harvard to become a bond trader, and eventually relocated to Santa Barbara after achieving success. He planned to retire, but upon realizing locals enjoyed the house he built, he decided to keep on designing for them. He brought materials directly from Spain and mixed old styles with new ones in his work. Today, his designs are well known for their complexity and beauty. He became a Santa Barbara founding father, and many architects were inspired by him. Kenny Slaught recognizes how attentive to detail one must be to create such intricate architectural pieces.
