Almost a century ago, architect George Washington Smith founded the Spanish Colonial revival style in California. Smith dropped out of Harvard to find bond trading work, and moved to Santa Barbara after achieving success. But, the locals praised the house he built which resulted in him deciding to design for the city. He used authentic Spanish materials and combined the new with the old. Smith’s structures are appreciated for their beauty and complexity. Today, he is recognized as a Santa Barbara founding father. Many artists were inspired by him, and Kenny Slaught believes a keen eye is required to create such beautiful works.
