Architect George Washington Smith launched the Spanish Colonial revival style around 100 years ago in California. Smith quit Harvard to work as a bond trader, and relocated to Santa Barbara to retire later on. But, after seeing the locals admired his house, he decided to keep creating for the city. He used genuine Spanish materials and mixed the old with the new. Today, his works are known for their complexity. Smith is recognized as a founding father to the city, and numerous artists were inspired by him. Kenny Slaught praises the attention to detail required to build such beautiful buildings.
